Prosper under maintenance - again

As of 12:12AM (PST) Prosper's website is down for maintenance. Prosper has had several outages over the past two weeks. Some of these were scheduled outages; other were not planned. I don't recall seeing a message about this outage so I'm guessing that it was not planned. At least it is in the middle of the night during a time of lower bidding activity. I do remember reading in the forums a few days ago that an unnamed hardware component was replaced and they did not anticipate any more unplanned outages. Once the forums are back up I'll link to the relevant posts. This is the message that I am currently greated with on the site:

Prosper Under Maintenance

In an effort to better serve you, we are currently making enhancements to our site. We appreciate your patience during this time, and encourage you to return shortly.

While the site is under maintenance, none of your information will be lost or forgotten. Listings, bids, and loan servicing will continue during the maintenance period.

Thank you for your patience.

Best regards,
Prosper

Update: I'm checking back now (an hour later) and the site is back up. I'm unsure how long the total outage was.

Update #2: It looks like this was scheduled. I didn't see it, but they ran this message yesterday, "Maintenance notice: The Prosper site will be taken offline for maintenance at 10:00 PM Pacific, July 1, 2007, and should be back online by 1:00 AM." Thanks to senator in the Prosper forums for the tip. Also from the forums - Loanchip caught a somewhat humorous screenshot of Google's search result for prosper.com. Luckily, this has already been updated.

you guys should write an entry about the '3rd' entry in this google search

I was laughing when I saw the 3 entries in combination - I mean how appropriate could that 3rd entry be based on the first two ;)

but if you read his blog, he wrote in 2006 a negative column than to be fair and balanced a far less supportive "pro" column (obviously he truly believed the negative column)

To me, he was very spot on with many of his first thoughts in the negative column

So I guess you are allowed to blog about a blog entry aren't you? :)

I thought it was pretty funny. I did read both those entries - why Prosper will fail and why Prosper will succeed. Pretty interesting stuff. I've thought about writing an update/response to those now that more than a year has passed. It might be awhile before I get to it though. I have a whole list of stuff I want to write about.

To be fair to the IT department at Prosper, I think it is perfectly okay to have downtime. Scheduled downtime can be good. Prosper is in a tough spot though because people have bids that may end during that downtime. It's possible that bids will not get funded or not get bid down as much as they would otherwise. People have a three year loan that might be impacted by that downtime. So it is very important that Prosper minimize these outages.

Right now Prosper does not have any true competitors. As competitors enter the marketplace it will become more and more important to execute perfectly.
